AI User Onboarding with Journeys
Journeys · AI user onboarding

AI user onboarding that does the work.

Most people sign up with one job in mind. A journey takes them there, one step at a time, inside your app. Your agent knows which step they're on, can do it for them, and shows you where people give up.

PRODUCT TOUR ALTERNATIVE

A tour points at the button. Your agent can press it.

People close tours and then get stuck on the very step the tour covered. Length makes it worse: in Chameleon's look at 550 million in-app interactions, 72% of people finished three-step tours and 16% finished tours of seven steps or more. So journeys stay short, and each step can simply get done.

A product tour

  • Shows everyone the same slides
  • Can't answer a question
  • Ends when the last tooltip closes
  • Leaves the work to the user

A ChatterMate journey

  • Starts from the page they're on or something they did
  • Answers from your help content in the middle of a step
  • Ends when your app reports a real result
  • Does the step if they say yes, or brings in a person
HOW IT WORKS

Set up AI user onboarding in four steps

01

Declare your actions

List what the agent may do in your app, like adding a client, and when it has to ask first.

02

Register them on your page

A few lines of JavaScript. The code runs in your app, in the user's own session.

03

Build the journey

Start from a template. Write each step's message and what counts as done. No code here.

04

Read the funnel

See how many people finish each step. Fix the one that loses them.

IN-APP ACTIONS

In-app onboarding that runs on your code

When the agent adds a client, it's your own function doing it, on the page, with the rights that user already has. We never see their password. You pick a rule for each action, and the in-app actions guide covers the setup.

NeverHarmless steps, like saving a draft or reading a value.

AlwaysAnything that leaves your app, like sending an invoice.

FUNNEL

See which step loses people

Each journey counts who reached a step, who finished it, who skipped it and how long it took. Open a step to see who's stuck there, and download the list if you want to email them.

Set a goal your app reports, like invoice_sent, so a win means something happened. Signed-in users keep their place across visits and devices.

WHY WE BUILT IT

We needed it for our own signups

Plenty of people signed up for ChatterMate and never got an agent live. Our setup wizard had four clear steps, and they still stopped halfway.

So we put an assistant next to it. It creates your agent, reads your website and hands you the install code, and it's built on the same journeys and actions you'd use. Sign up and it opens beside the wizard.

Quick summary

ChatterMate Journeys is AI user onboarding for web apps. You write a short path of steps, your agent guides each new user through it inside your product, and it can do the steps for them with in-app actions you control. A funnel shows where people stop. Journeys are on the Pro plan, and self-hosted installs get them too.

Questions about AI user onboarding

What is AI user onboarding?

It's onboarding run by an AI agent inside your product. The agent knows what the user has done so far, answers their questions and can carry out steps for them. A product tour can only show them where to click.

Which plans include Journeys?

Pro and above. Self-hosted installs get them with no plan limits. In-app actions are on every plan, with up to three on Free.

Do I need a developer?

Once, to register your actions on the page. After that anyone on your team can write and change journeys in the dashboard.

Will it work with my app?

If your app runs in a browser and you can add our script, yes. The actions are plain JavaScript functions, so they can call whatever your app already calls.

Can the agent do something I didn't allow?

No. It can only call actions you declared and your page registered, and only on domains you allow. The widget draws the confirm card, so the model can't skip it.

Do journey messages use up my message limit?

No. They aren't model calls and they stay out of your inbox until the user replies. Replies from the agent count as normal.
